BUMPS AND BRUISES

Having a little boy I have quickly become accustomed to the constant acquisition of bumps, scratches and bruises. They climb on everything, and run everywhere so I guess its inevitable.

This weekend we were at home and Jake brought Carder out to me who was crying, Jake told me he bumped his eye by falling into the dresser, and thought he was only crying so hard because it was the same eye he had "bonked" (how Carder tells me he has hit something) by pulling my jewelry armoire on top of himself earlier that evening (never a dull moment I tell you). Anyway, I go to get him and notice blood running down his face, I try to blot it a little and see that it is definitely gaping, this is not just some little scratch, he had split it open.

By this point he had totally stopped crying but was still dripping blood (I swear the child feels no pain, he'll cry for a minute and then its like nothing happened). Anyway I am kind of freaking out on the inside because its a face wound, so I don't know if I need to get him stitches or what. I call my mom, who is a nurse, and ask her what I should do, she seems to be on the fence, so she has me send her some pictures. By this time its like 11:30 at night, so I either have to do something myself or go to the ER (yeah not one of my favorite places to go, but its on his FACE so I just may have to). We come to the conclusion that it is a pretty clean cut so I could just steri-strip/tape it together. Well Carder would have nothing to do with me touching it, we had to get him to sleep and then construct some strips out of the big clear waterproof band aids (ya definitely need to update my first aid stuff!). It went together pretty well, but my mom said it needed to be left on for at least 72 hours, so I couldn't check on it or anything. Well, we took it off a couple of days ago, and it just looks like a little scratch (thank goodness!)...so I guess my primitive nursing skills aren't so bad.

Day 1
The wound...mind you this is after peroxiding it 3 or 4 times so the red part isn't blood its how much it was gaping
Day 2
In the pictures from my last post you may have been asking yourself what was on his face...yeah, it definitely was not some new fashion statement
Day 3
Excuse the horrible pictures, my trusty camera that I have been sporting since I graduated from high school in 2004 has finally started to die one me :(

Day 5
That can't be snow outside our window it's only October...yes, welcome to Salt Lake
Day 7
The tape is off and if I must say so not too bad

BYU v TCU

This weekend was a fun one, Jake went down to Provo to attend ESPN College Gameday in the morning, then later we were able to get some lunch with my cousin John who was in town from North Carolina, which was way fun to catch up (we are just bummed we didn't get to see Melanie and their adorable boys). Then we took Carder to his first BYU football game. Jake went with his buddy, John Millburn, because of course they had to get there early and stay the whole time...while I went with Brittany and her friends (since for girls its more of a social event, that's why I enjoyed myself and if you talk to Jake his experience was more one of frustration since the team had a less than stellar performance). As for the girls we had a lot of fun, we just stayed for a few quarters, because it was pretty chilly, but Carder thoroughly enjoyed the experience. When we walked into the stadium he is pointing at all the banners, posters etc. and just saying "cougars cougars." Our seats were just 3 rows in front of the band, so I was worried Carder might get freaked out by the blast of noise. He was a little unsure at first, but quickly became a fan. Every time they would play a song, especially "Rise and Shout" he would say "more more". He also loved the jumbo tron, I don't know what he paid more attention to that screen or the real game. Anyway it was way fun to go back to the Alma Mater to go to a game.
Carder was obsessed with the basketball on John's shirt...he even had to hold on to it for this picture
Carder totally intrigued with the band sitting just a few rows behind us

Warning : Picture Overload

Wow I am really turning into a binge blogger!!! The past few weeks have been a little crazy, but in a good way, but now I just have to catch up, so I apologize for the overload...

The beginning of this month my mom and Jaxon came out to stay with us for a week. It was so fun to have them here, every morning Carder would wake up saying "Mimi" "Ja Jon" his version of Jaxon and just run out to find them. This is the first time that they REALLY played together well. They have always got along in the past, but this time the thoroughly enjoyed each other as playmates. You would constantly hear the pitter patter of little feet as they ran through my house while Carder held onto the back of Jaxon's shirt where ever they would go. And they would just sporadically hug one another...it was so precious. Its a bummer we don't live closer.

My sister in law told me about this sweet haircutting place where the kids get to sit in Cars/Airplanes to get their haircut and get to pick out a movie for their personal TV. Lets just say it was a hit :)

A sucker, The Wiggles, a sweet hot rod chair, and Dad blowing bubbles...now that's how you get through a haircut

So my little brother Jaxon is currently obsessed with Superheros. He is constantly wearing costumes, so one night I got out my old batgirl costume from college and came running down the hall to surprise him, he thought I was pretty cool that night.

We had lots of park outings that week, but it has definitely started to get a little chilly so the beanies and mittens had to come out

Poor little California boy with freezing hands at the park (we brought mittens for him the next time)

One night the my Mom made cookies with the boys...they are at the age that they want to help with EVERYTHING...pretty much it looked like a flour bomb had exploded in my kitchen, but the boys had a blast making the sugar cookies and cutting out all their shapes, so its all good.
tasting testing after each new ingredient is added
getting their surface ready to roll the dough
Carder thinking he needs to taste the flour as well
I don't think I could have put the flour on him more perfectly

getting a taste yet again

...and still more tasting (will their be any dough left for cookies?)
Fun Times :)

FALL BREAK

Jake had an interview in Vegas with a Judge for a possible federal clerkship after school, so since we were so close we just went a few more hours to California for the rest of his fall break (I know...Fall Break, what is that? BYU didn't even have a spring break, and Utah has TWO!) It was so nice to bask in the warm weather and just hang out with the fam. We even got to catch one of Kelsie's tennis matches :)

Kelsie our little tennis stud, she made the team after only starting to play at the end of this summer...and the team isn't some joke, Lindsay Davenport graduated from our high school, so we are super impressed with Miss Kelsita!!!

A Day of Rest

Sunday is supposed to be a restful day, but when you have a 16 month old its just the opposite. Keeping him on my lap for a 3 hour block of church, with Sacrament meeting being the last hour (torture I tell you) takes all the energy I have. Due to Jake and I getting some callings in the ward where it would be kinda hard to do them and keep the little guy at bay, we were able to start Carder in nursery. Not gonna lie nursery has kind of freaked me out in the past, I've always thought of it as a little person cesspool, who knows what your child could come home with...but the past few months I have been counting down the days til he could start. Carder did great, as soon as he saw a Barney puzzle laying on the table he was out of my arms ready to play. Jake even did the pop in to check on him and Carder just looked up at him and then went right back to playing. Hopefully he continues to be a good nursery attendee (as well as disease free).

So Jake and I got real grown up callings. In the past we have always been something together (ward missionaries, activities, cub scout leaders), but within just a couple weeks of being in the ward I got called as primary secretary and Jake as Priest Quorum advisor. It's so weird, because even though I am married and have a child its still hard to consider myself a grown up (maybe the fact that we are still living the "student" life is a contributor). Its been good though because it has really made us get involved in our new ward which has been hard since we haven't been in anyone place for very long.

We picked Carder up from nursery, and he sat on our laps during Sacrament meeting with minimal struggle, and then after took a sweet nap. After that we went to enjoy what I am sure is to be one of the last nice weekends of the year at a BBQ at Jake's grandparents house. The kids got to pick out pumpkins from the garden and had a blast running through the cornstalks. Finally a Sunday that lived up to its name!
